DEODORANTS OR ANTIPERSPIRANTS?

Most people may not be able to differentiate between Deodorants or Antiperspirants since they are both believed to be some sort of ‘sprays’ that perform the same duty. Well, they might be similar in some ways but they are both totally unique and different entities. At the end of this article, you should be able to identify which one of the two you are most comfortable in, so let us go ahead and dig right in.

To begin with, let us differentiate between the two terms. Deodorant is a substance applied to the body to prevent body odor caused by the bacterial breakdown of perspiration in armpits, feet, and other areas of the body while Antiperspirant is a substance that is applied to the skin, especially under the arms, to prevent or reduce perspiration.

How do they work?

Deodorant: Our armpits are home to many sweat glands, creating two warm and tucked-away spots where bacteria can thrive. To make our armpits a little less bacteria-friendly, deodorants contain ingredients that are acidic or salty. No bacteria to mix with the sweat means no smell. Some deodorants also contain fragrance or perfumes to mask unpleasant body odors.

Antiperspirant: Check the label of most antiperspirant, and you’ll find aluminum compounds as the active ingredients. These compounds absorb into the skin, temporarily plugging up the sweat ducts, stemming the flow of sweat. That “plug” only lasts for a little while, so that’s why people have to reapply antiperspirant to keep dry.

Which one should you use?

Most products include both antiperspirant and deodorant ingredients hence you may not even be thinking too much about your decision to use one or the other. It all comes down to personal choice. Decide based on your personal needs. First, consider which sweat side effect you want to deal with: the wetness or the smell – or both?

What does deodorant do?

There are around 1 million bacteria per square centimeter on our skin. Deodorants work to reduce this number of bacteria by either killing it off completely, or slowing its reproduction. The strength of the antimicrobial ingredients will play a part in how long you stay odor-free. The fewer bacteria, the less smelly your sweat!

One of the biggest benefits of using a deodorant is the ease of use and the versatility. Deodorants are available as sticks, roll-ons, creams or sprays and they aren’t just for the underarms! Many deodorant products can be applied to the feet or other ‘smelly’ areas. Another benefit is the antibacterial ingredients in deodorants work to reduce harmful bacteria.

What does antiperspirants do?

If soggy shirts and sweaty pits are your primary concern, you’ll want to explore a extra strength antiperspirant. Antiperspirants are effective in eliminating odor because they stop up the bacterias food supply (protein packed sweat). The chemicals in antiperspirant formulas are designed to “plug up” the pores of your underarms, preventing sweat from escaping. Antiperspirants becomes a kind of temporary ‘plug’ near the top of the sweat glands. This blocks or contracts the sweat glands, reducing the amount of sweat that can escape to the pores on the skin. No sweat means those fats and proteins can’t reach the skin and react with bacteria. And that means no smell!

Like deodorant, most antiperspirants are available in many forms, such as sticks, roll-ons, towellettes, gels or creams. Antiperspirants are best applied to affected areas after bathing, while the skin is clean and sweat-free. It’s also best to apply antiperspirants at night when sweat glands are less active

Antiperspirant vs Deodorant: When to Use What

What’s better for your situation? Deodorant or Antiperspirant?

  1. Do you just want to get to the end of the day without smelling foul?

Your choice of deodorant should do the trick. Some deodorants have a longer lasting fragrance, but most will be able to control odor for the average sweater.

  1. Soggy underarms cramping your style?

Reach for a reputable antiperspirant. Antiperspirants are the only thing that can really reduce your sweating. If you have an excessive sweating problem or struggle with hyperhidrosis, look for a strong antiperspirant that can control sweat without staining your shirts.

There you have. At the end of it all, it all comes down to personal preference. Visit any of our Goodlife stores, and we can carry on the conversation and help you pick out what you really need from our wide range of products.

TIPS TO A PERFECT SKIN

From the moment we hit puberty, glowing pretty flawless skin is a unicorn we keep chasing. This being a digital era doesn’t make the journey any easier. We are served with photos of models with the perfect skin on a daily basis.

Having a flawless skin is not really a hard task.     What it requires is consistency. Here are a few daily tips to make your journey easier.

  1. Clean your face before bed.

Not washing away the day’s grime? You’re asking for a breakout. The day’s make-up clogs your pores which causes break out. There are some nights when you are tired, had a long day and cleaning your face is pretty much the last thing on your mind. The best trick is to stash cleansing wipes on your nightstand for these nights. This way, you can avoid waking up to uncomfortable break outs.

  1. Less is more.

Too many products can irritate and too many steps may tempt you to skip. When it comes to your skin, more is definitely NOT more. In other words, trying a bunch of different remedies at once won’t boost your chances of making the zit disappear — more likely, it’ll just wreak havoc on your skin and turn a teeny-tiny pimple into a red, blotchy mess.

  1. Wash, then exfoliate.

When washing, first use a mild face wash to cleanse your skin. Then, lightly massage exfoliator onto your face. This may seem redundant, but before you exfoliate, you want a clean canvas, so that the exfoliant can focus on digging out the stubborn dirt and oil that are stuck deeper inside your pores.

  1. Step away from your hands.

You know how you rest your face on your hand while you’re studying? That might be the reason for those blemishes on your cheek or jaw. You’re constantly touching things that have germs—anything from your phone to your locker—so putting your hands on your face for a long period of time can cause dirt and bacteria from anything you touch to get into your pores.

  1. Change that pillowcase on a regular basis.

Not changing your pillowcases enough can also cause your skin to break out. Even if you wash your face every night, your pillowcases carry dirt and sweat from your hair, hands, and build up from the products you use on your face at night, which can clog your pores, so it’s a good idea to change them every few days.

  1. You need to clean your phone, too.

If you’re seeing pimples on your cheeks or anywhere near the area where you hold your phone, they may be from those hour-long convos with your crush. Your phone picks up lots of dirt and bacteria (from your hands, your bag, the kitchen counter), which can then get transferred to your face when you’re chatting on the phone. Wipe your screen with an anti-bacterial wipe often to get rid of dirt and germs.

  1. Know your skin type

We all have different skin types. It could be dry or oily, could be sensitive. This guides you to the type of products that will be good for your skin. It is recommendable to seek professional help from a dermatologist so as to avoid using products that may harm your skin.

It is the simple things we do to take care of our skin that create consistency in a flawless glowing skin. If followed on a daily basis, taking care of the skin becomes an easier process. Visit any of our branches and we will guide you on the right products as per your skin type.

GOODLIFE PREGNANCY NUTRITION

A woman’s taste preferences change throughout pregnancy and these changes may affect what she chooses to eat. Sometimes, the cravings are for common foods such as chocolate cake or apples, and sometimes there is an urge to eat unusual food combinations or a type of food that you normally do not like.

It is OK to give in to the occasional food craving, as long as you continue to eat a good variety of healthy foods.

If you are craving a lot of unhealthy foods, such as sweets or chocolate, try not to over-indulge. Too much sugar can cause excessive weight gain and dental problems. Here are a couple of foods to avoid during pregnancy;

  1. Undercooked and Processed Meats

Make sure that all meat is well cooked. Either avoid processed meats such as hot dogs or make sure that they are completely cooked. This is because the risk of food poisoning is higher in pregnant women.

  1. Raw Eggs

Raw eggs (and foods cooked using raw eggs) may contain salmonella, a harmful bacterium. Some homemade mayonnaises, mousses, salad dressings and sauces contain raw egg, as does raw batter. Eggs may be eaten if properly cooked, all the way through.

  1. Limit caffeine

Caffeine intake should be limited during pregnancy, as too much caffeine has been linked to low birth weight and even miscarriage. It does not have to be cut out altogether, but intake should be limited to 200mg per day. Remember that some cola fizzy drinks contain caffeine, and check the ingredients so you know how much you are consuming.

  1. Liver

Liver, or products containing liver, such as vitamin supplements, has a high vitamin A content. This vitamin does not break down in your body and can build up to levels toxic to your baby.

  1. Alcohol

Alcohol may severely affect your baby’s development. Avoid alcohol if pregnant or even trying to conceive.

To add on to the nutrition, it is important to exercise during pregnancy. Pregnant women who exercise have less back pain, more energy, a better body image, and post-delivery, a faster return to their pre-pregnancy shape. GOODLIFE PHARMACY APPOINTS AMAAN KHALFAN AS CEO

The board of the leading pharmacy brand in East Africa, Goodlife Pharmacy Ltd, has appointed a new CEO Amaan Nizar Khalfan. The company is focused on continued rapid expansion with increased services, to become the first choice of primary health care provider.

Amaan’s experience and expertise make him uniquely placed to lead Goodlife. Through his extensive executive positions, he has been involved in operational restructuring projects in the areas of private equity, agribusiness, manufacturing and water and sanitation. Prior to joining Goodlife, Amaan served as Chief Operations Officer at Aga Khan University Hospital’s Outreach division, one of the largest network of outpatient medical centers in East Africa. Within this role, he managed over 500 employees and 48 medical centers in the region. His aptitude to implement interventions, mobilize teams and apply sound business principles ensured financial and operational sustainability. Amaan is also a process change expert who used operational restructuring methods to achieve high levels of efficiency and productivity at the various projects he has been involved with.

“With 37 outlets in Kenya and Uganda, Goodlife plans to continue its expansion to 100 stores across the region and will rely on the process change expertise of the newly appointed CEO to guide them through this process”, Mentioned Dr. Felix Olale, Partner at Leap Frog and Global Head of Healthcare for Leapfrog Investments, Goodlife’s lead investor.

“My aim is to hit the ground running,” stated Amaan Khalfan. “I will work to ensure the company grows quickly within East Africa and is always the preferred brand to use. I would also like to see employees grow within the Goodlife family and maintain the culture that makes this such a great place to work! As the brand continues to grow, we will develop programmes that target marginalized communities in order to assist alleviate some of the basic medical ailments in those regions, and create a better, healthier lifestyle for all. That is the Goodlife after all!”

Amaan’s appointment comes shortly after the announcement of Justin Melvin as Chief Retail Officer late last year. The new positions demonstrate the progression in leadership as Goodlife expands and the determination to remain at the helm of retail pharmacy services in East Africa.

NUTRITION FOR CHILDREN

It is with no doubt that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it is especially crucial for kids as they are active most part of their day. Ideally, a healthy breakfast meal for children should include carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats — that’ll give your child energy until lunch.

Try not to have doughnuts or pastries all the time. They are high in calories, sugar, and fat. They do not contain the nutrients a kid really needs plus pastries like doughnuts wont fill up the child for long.

Just like with other meals, try to eat a variety of foods, including:

  • fruit
  • vegetables
  • grains ( make at least half your grains whole grains)
  • protein (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dry beans, nuts, and seeds)
  • dairy products (low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese, and yogurt)
