Lactose Intolerance



Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in dairy products, due to a deficiency in the enzyme lactase.

Causes:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Aging-related enzyme decline
  • Gastrointestinal diseases affecting lactase production

Symptoms:

  • Bloating and gas
  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea after consuming dairy

Treatment & Management:

  • Avoid dairy products or opt for lactose-free alternatives
  • Use lactase enzyme supplements
  • Incorporate non-dairy calcium sources (almonds, leafy greens, fortified foods)
  • Read food labels to avoid hidden lactose
